Contents and organisation of the curriculum

The Foundation Stage (ages 3-5)
The Foundation Stage makes a crucial contribution to children’s early development and learning. We provide children with a rich variety of learning experiences that are appropriate to their needs. The Foundation Stage is about developing key skills such as listening, speaking, concentrating, persistence and learning to work and co-operate with others. The six areas of learning that make up the Foundation Stage curriculum are:

Personal and social development
Communication, language and literacy
Mathematical development
Knowledge and understanding of the world
Physical development
Creative development

The outdoor environment is also a very special part of the Foundation Stage curriculum. As such it is carefully planned for and available each day. The teaching to achieve these early learning goals will be through first hand experience and structured play. The areas of experience will be linked to the National Curriculum.

Assessments of development and learning needs will be ongoing throughout the school year and will be shared with parents during parents’ consultation evenings. By the end of the year the teachers will have built up an accurate profile of each child’s development. These will also be shared with parents at the end of the school year.

Key Stage 1 (ages 5-7 years) and 2 (ages 7-11)
The National Curriculum provides clear guidelines for study in the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science, and the foundation subjects: History, Geography, Music, Art, PE, Design Technology and ICT (Information and Communication Technology). Religious Education is a basic curriculum entitlement for all children. We also include Health Education, Citizenship and Personal and Social Education as part of our curriculum. In 2007/8 we also taught French, Spanish and Philosophy.

We carefully plan activities to match the needs of each child and have our own curriculum plan, which builds in progress across each year. This includes a two-year rolling programme of projects to cover each aspect of the National Curriculum.

Further details of our curriculum are available in the school prospectus.
