PDF: Homework Policy
RATIONALE
Homework encourages children to develop the skills needed to work independently, extends school learning and consolidates and reinforces the skills and understanding developed at school. At Rode we value homework as a means of fostering the partnership between home and school.
AIMS
- Develop an effective partnership between school and parents in pursing the aims of the school.
- Consolidate and reinforce skills and understanding, particularly in literacy and numeracy. Where homework will be linked to targets.
- Explore resources for learning of all kinds, at home.
- Explore school learning through additional reading and research.
- Encourage children, as they get older to develop the confidence and self-discipline needed to study on their own, and prepare them for the next phase in education.
GUIDELINES
Homework is set on a regular basis. Class teachers provide homework appropriate to the age and ability of the child.
Homework will not be used to introduce new concepts but rather to consolidate work already introduced in class. It includes daily reading, learning spellings and numeracy skills.
The school acknowledges the value of out of school activities in which children are involved and so a reasonable amount of time will be given to complete a piece of work.
Parents are informed of homework arrangements in their child's class by the class teachers at the information meetings and in information packs each term and at the Parent Consultation meeting held in the Autumn Term. It is expected that parents will support their children by discussing their homework and helping them where appropriate.
Teachers allow time to value and share completed homework and keep a record of each child's contribution.
