This large mound of soil was created when the multi-sensory pathway was originally dug. The Shrub Mound quickly become rather overgrown and we started weeding it and planning what was needed - shrubs, and lots of them.

After speaking with Barters Nursery at Chapmanslade, we were given a large number of wonderful shrubs and ground cover plants, which have been planted all over the mound and colour coordinated! There is a pathway at the back of the mound and the main play equipment stands directly in front on the mound, along with a bird table and our tunnel of fruit trees.

Before this mound was planted up, the children of Rode School had become used to using it as a shortcut, and so we thought that they would appreciate their very own pathway, which has been created with large slices of oak logs. Strong-smelling purple sage was planted either side of the pathway, so that the children can brush past it and enjoy the fragrance created - that's the theory anyway!

The top of the Shrub Mound has been planted with a clump of five silver birch trees (betula pendula), which with careful pruning, will not be allowed to grow much taller. Other plants on the mound include choisya, cornus, dianthus, erigeron, euonymus, hardy geraniums, heuchera, hydrangea, hypericum, iris, lavender, osteospermum, phlox, polygonum, potentilla, rosemary, smoke bush (cotinus), spirea and weigela, amongst many others.
