Rode School Gardens: Flower Border

The 'Flower Border' has been strategically positioned so that it sits directly in front of parents waiting for their children in the playground. This oval-shaped border is always a very colourful part of the garden, with lots of flowers set either side of the pathway.

The flowers start with snowdrops in the winter, followed soon after by daffodils (variety 'tete a tete') and herbaceous plants, which flower roughly in order of: hardy geraniums, bugle, anthemis, campanula, oxalis, erigeron, osteospermum, lysamachia, echinacea, verbena, sedum, evening primrose, Japanese anemone and crocosmia.

These two borders always have resilient species planted next to the pathways, which will soon recover from a stray foot here, or a scooter wheel there! However, this has never really been much of a problem, as the children seem to treat the gardens with great respect.

The 'Friendship Bench' is usually placed next to the Flower Border, and if any child feels that they are on their own at playtime, they simply sit on this bench and wait for a friend to arrive. Although this sounds like a very simple idea, it is extremely effective and works well for us.
