RATIONALE
In Somerset there is one main intake at the beginning of the Autumn Term and another deferred entry at the beginning of the Spring Term.
In Somerset there is one intake every year at the beginning of the Autumn Term. Children may be admitted in September of the year when they are five: the selection year runs from 1 September to 31st August.
Parents complete a pupil detail form (sent out by the Admissions Teams at Somerset County Council), which is then returned to Somerset County council. Parents then receive a Starting School Guide in January. By the end of March they are informed whether their application has been successful.
THE COUNTY OVERSUBSCRIPTION CRITERIA
The County over subscription criteria for community and VC schools are set out below and are applied in strict order until places have been offered up to the Schools planned admissions Number.
1. Looked after children (children in public care)
2. Children with a statement of Special Educational Needs (SEN), which names the school
3. Children living in the catchment area, with an older sibling at the school at the time of admission, and who live at the same address
4. Children living in the catchment area
5. Children living outside the catchment area, with an older sibling at the school at the time of admission, and who live at the same address
6. In VC schools
a) - With a religious foundation children of families who are practising members of the founding religious body of the school (e.g. Anglican or Methodist)
b) - Children of families who are practising members of other churches or religious denominations.
Practising is defined as at least once a month attendance at church by at least one parent and/or child (where necessary this may be confirmed with a member of the clergy)
7. Children living outside the catchment area, but nearest to the school
IMPORTANT NOTES
1.Where a child has a statement of special educational needs which names a particular school, the governing body of that school has a duty to admit the child
2. Where a child does not have a statement of special needs but whose attendance is necessary at a particular school because of, for example, a physical disability, the admission authority for that school will be required to admit that child
3. If there are not enough places to satisfy all the applications under any one criteria, the following will apply:
- For all catchment area children: priority will be given to those who have a longer (as the crow flies) or more difficult (i.e. physical geographical barriers) journey to an alternative school
- For out of catchment children, priority will be given to those living nearest to the school (as the crow flies)
